We’re proud to announce that Dr. Emily Boevers, Founder and President of Iowans for Health Liberty, was a key speaker at the 2024 Democratic National Convention’s Rural Council live panel. During this critical discussion, Dr. Boevers brought to light the severe risks that restrictive abortion laws pose to rural healthcare, emphasizing how these laws jeopardize women’s lives, even when they are not seeking to end a pregnancy.
In her remarks, Dr. Boevers highlighted the dangers of current legislation, explaining, “These laws tie one hand behind the back of our healthcare providers, forcing us to fit into a legislative box before we can provide standard of care medicine to our patients.” She further elaborated on how routine pregnancy complications, such as preterm rupture of membranes or sepsis, which often require abortion care to save a woman’s life, are now entangled in unnecessary legal restrictions.
Dr. Boevers also addressed the broader dangers of hostility in healthcare access, stating,
“Restricting healthcare access risks turning everyday healthcare situations into life-threatening emergencies.” She emphasized the urgent need to protect and expand healthcare access in rural areas to prevent such crises.
Additionally, Dr. Boevers shed light on another pressing issue: the alarming rise of cancer in Iowa’s rural communities. “Iowa is one of the rural states with the highest rate of increase in cancer detection,” she noted, pointing to environmental factors and the critical need for a healthcare system that prioritizes rural health.
This discussion is essential viewing for anyone concerned about the future of healthcare in Iowa and across the nation. Watch the full panel discussion below and join us in advocating for the rights of all Iowans.
