We’re Physicians. We Want to Care for Women, and Abortion Bans Hurt Them

Op-Ed, Des Moines Register, Published July 14, 2023

Dr. Andrea Greiner wrote an Op-Ed that was published in the Des Moines Register on July 14, 2023, in opposition to the proposed abortion restrictions in Iowa. She wrote from the point of view of OBGYN physicians who value “advocacy for women before, during and after pregnancy by promoting their reproductive choices.” Abortion restrictions jeopardize the health of women. She pointed to maternal outcomes in Texas and Ireland where abortion restrictions resulted in worse outcomes for complicated pregnancies, including maternal death. She warned that these outcomes could increase in Iowa if more restrictive abortion legislation takes effect. OBGYN physicians want to provide every woman with every option so that she can make the best decision for herself, her health and her pregnancy.
