Exceptions In Abortion Ban Don’t Protect Mothers

Dr. Amy Bingaman knows there may come a time in the near future when she might have to choose between her Iowa medical license or the life of a pregnant person she is treating.

“I could never imagine letting a woman die on my watch when I could intervene,” Bingaman said. “The problem is to do the right thing for a patient and then have to worry about someone taking my medical license. It’s not the way anyone wants to practice medicine.”

Dr. Andrea Greiner wrote an Op-Ed that was published in the Des Moines Register on July 14, 2023, in opposition to the proposed abortion restrictions in Iowa. She wrote from the point of view of OBGYN physicians who value “advocacy for women before, during and after pregnancy by promoting their reproductive choices.” Abortion restrictions jeopardize the health of women. She pointed to maternal outcomes in Texas and Ireland where abortion restrictions resulted in worse outcomes for complicated pregnancies, including maternal death.

Iowa Supreme Court rules on Planned Parenthood vs. Reynolds

In 2019, an low district court permanently enjoined the 6-week abortion ban (SF359) and protected Iowans right to access healthcare including abortion services in early pregnancy without government interference. In an earlier decision that year, the district court stated “autonomy and dominion over one’s body go to the very heart of what it means to be free”.
